Unless Im sadly mistaken "bar" shears are not designed to cut more than 1" 
to 1.5" lengths (or so).

My big # 7 Edwards will take an 8 inch cut in sheet metal but it would be a 
real bugger to do. Its designed to cut bar stock.. not sheet metal.
It makes quick quiet work of 1/2 bar and 5/8 x 1.5" but you cant position 
sheet metal and hold it in place to make a cut.

What your looking for to do this would be a Marshalltown rotary , a 
Beaverly or a box type shear made for sheet metal.
Ive got a friend that has a big motor driven Marshalltown that will cut 
1/4" plate like butter. But with plasma... why bother...
