I am following this thread on anvil repair with great interest, I
have repaired a few anvils using different materials and techniques.
Basically steel or wrought anvils, preheat 400 deg. cast iron preheat to
450 deg. I use an infrared thermometer to check and recheck temperature.
I have used Stoody and am now using MG 750, basically because it is a
high impact rod. What I would like to know is, has anyone done a test of
the face of an anvil with a rockwell tester to really see what really
happens to different areas after welding. Are there really soft areas
around the weldment or not? I have never noticed any when using a
repaired anvil. I like the MG 750 (a work hardening rod) as opposed to
rod that go on hard because I've had some edge chipping problems with
the latter.
P.S.
Andy, I thought we were holding temps to around 400 deg. last week.
