Thanks, Philip.  I put off replying, awaiting the flood of answers.
So far, yours is the only one.

I never heard of a waterlift muffler.  Gooogle "waterlift"....  Lots
of references describing something pretty much like this thing.  One
even refers to such a muffler as being cast iron and heavy.

I assumeed that the pre-heat feature was to heat intake air for
whatever engine it went on.  After posting, I took the thing apart and
found a 6" piece of rusty 1/4" pipe with elbow loose inside, possibly
the water injection bit dropped when dismantling it?  Waterlift
mufflers seem to be a boat thing.  I've never seen this on any of the
small boats around here but I haven't been on a great many.

Whatever it is, it's decades old, judging by the rust and casting
style.

I sent the URL to the local Old Engine group's newsletter, too.  No
replies so far.
