Saturday's Toronto Globe & Mail had a kitchen knife review in the food
section. Interesting to see what is apparently a pattern welded knife
from Seki of Japan. The not very technical reviewer said:

The blade's wavy pattern is made by repeatedly folding and
forging 16 layers of stainless steel on each side. It's then
sandblasted and polished. At [Canadian] $210 for a chef's knife
with a black laminated wooden handle, this objet d'art should not
be thrown carelessly in a drawer or in a dishwasher.

This may be old news to the knife guys but it's the first instance
I've seen of an apparently mass produced product like this. I gather
that the patterned material is cladding on an otherwise conventional
blade.
