Any of you folks consider using carbon powder (aka, charcoal, coal,
etc.)?  Carbon is a refractory.  Graphite crucibles are better than
run-of-the-mill ceramic crucibles.  True, it burns, but that can be an
advantage.  No residue.

Seems to me blacksmiths have been lubricating with carbon a long time
now.  The burning can even pop the punch out of the hole.

Molly D  is not so good at forging temperatures. Most lubricants with 
MdS2 are rated to 1000F or less. I use a Boron Nitride ceramic paste as

a forging lubricant  with the trade name of weld-r-white it is useful 
as a lubricant to temps in excess of 2000F. ( it also works as an anti

splatter and brazing stop off)
