I've heard of using MdS2 as an agent to keep punches/chisels from sticking
in hot work. It is apparently a powder, would anyone mind sharing their
experience/ recipes for using this stuff? Is it "better" than graphite or
coal dust, etc?
Molydisulfide is used extensively as a lubricant by "cold headers", the
people that head screws and bolts from coils of steel wire, especially stainless
steels. It is available in powder, paste and liquid. It replaced copper as a
lubricant for the same use as it is less expensive and much easier to remove
after heading (dont need acid). It is applied to the coils of steel wire right
after degreasing by dipping the coil in a tank of it and then drawing it
tight to the wire with a pass through a die. Everyone seems to have their own
recipe for making it, and you could probably get info from the Internet.
Molydisulfide is real slippery and is added to all kinds of lubricants such as oil to
increase its effectiveness.
