For welding small parts I use my smithin magicin stand with the bottom die
out of my treadle hammer. I preheat the die a little first. I can also put
the stand right next to the forge so I don't have to move very far from fire
to anvil, helps to keep the parts aligned.
In the winter I heat a block for my anvil to take the chill out of it before
starting to forge.

Has anyone experimented with a heated anvil surface? This would make welding
and working on small pieces much easier.
