Paddy, Unless you are wanting to build an Oliver type treadle hammer for
historical reasons with the effort required why not build one of the more
modern treadle hammers designs? From my point of view they would be about
the same amount of work. I did an article on Treadle Hammers for the
Appalachian Area Chapter of Blacksmiths Newsletter and can send you that
article offline if you are interested. It is a large file, (1.7 MB) and
will not fit into most hotmail accounts unless you have the "paid for
account". Or if you have another email address that will take this large
file let me know off line. The article doesn't include any plans and is
mostly about building Clay Spencer's In Line Hammer Design (cost of plans $
9.00 from Clay) but does include information on purchasing plans for the
original ABANA design (Gade-Marx) from Peter Stanaitis or Jere Kirkpatrick.
Also there is the Grasshopper design of Bruce Freeman who is here on
TheForge too. You might want to check out Bruce's website for a wealth of
information on Treadle Hammers it is at
http://www.monmouth.com/~freeman/bmf/grashopr.htm

I think Bruce's site has the best total set of information including links
on Treadle Hammers.
