Actually these old flat heads aren't that hard to work on. The engine parts
are usually simple, the biggest draw back is if the valve guides are shot
(Engine to machine shop if they are not replaceable) Take to pan off the
bottom , the side tappet cover off and lift the head off. Then look for
extra pieces and piles of ground up parts. Try to rock the valves back and
forth when the head is off and the valves open, a little movement is
possible but it shouldn't dance. If you have the head off check the
cylinder walls for cracks and excessive ridge. If a rod went, check the
piston and wrist pin for damage. After figuring out what is wrong then the
hard part, I need a # thisit for a # # that engine. The hardest part is the
magneto if the is one, check for all markings, knowlegeable people and
sound advice before removing. I had one of these engines in a 300 Lincoln
welder for years with a 6 volt system and a hand crank. I used to
disconnect the generator and start the starter with 12 volts in the winter.
Updraft carb on it?
