If you plan on using a generator on a regular basis for things like shop power a diesel engine will be the most fuel efficient and have the lowest maintenance cost over the long haul. However it will probably be the most expensive type to buy. A three phase generator is a more expensive option. A rotary phase converter will give you good solid three phase power if you need it for a much lower cost. Jim
