Tom, Dave,
We had one of our BAM mambers bring several coils of 1/8 x 1.5 flat stock to
conference a couple years ago. I don't know what this stuff is but you
almost don't have to heat it to forge it (very low carbon). I got one coil
(about 200#) of the stuff and wish that I had gotten more. I use to make pot
racks by upsetting the edge to make it into aprox 3/16 x 1". Gives a real
nice texture to the material. Because it's so soft doesn't really take that
long to do, one heat per section.
I've asked the guy if he knew what it was. He has no idea, only that they
got it at work for a special project and it didn't work for what they
wanted. He was tasked with disposing of the stuff, where do you get a job
like that, sweet?

Dear Dave,
I called a couple of mills a while back and 1003 is available by the
"carrier" which I think is about 3000# or so, up to 1/2" dia. round, but it
is coiled, so we would need to rig up a straightener. Do you have experience
with unwinding a coil of steel into rods? 1003 would sure forge and weld
nicely. (drool)
