I was never able to get a result I liked with that technique.  I
resorted to using 6 separate pieces: A central leaf, two side leaves,
two stamen-like pieces and a band to hold it all together.  The band
concealed the tack welds that held the other pieces together.

A side-benefit of this approach is that experiments with getting each
part just the way you like it don't involve tossing the whole piece.
