I-beam will work- just gotta stabilize the bottom so it doesn't flip on you
when you hit it. Most beginners use RR track, and cut it so it has useful
surfaces- can scan and sent you a picture, if you like.

Basicly, all you need is a hard, non-burnable surface, preferably
reasonbably smooth. Weight to it is nice, but can be overcome by screwing or
stapling it down to a stump, that IS heavy, if all you have is some steel
plate. In early Medieval period, an anvil was quite frequently a rock, and
some really nice work can be done on a stump or stake anvil.
