Friends and Internet Acquaintances:

As I've mentioned over theforge in the past few weeks, my friend Sara
and I are planning to do an informal, mostly walking tour of (downtown
/
center city) Philadelphia to view the ironwork of Samuel Yellin. We
are
welcoming others to join us who have interest in or knowledge of
Samuel
Yellin's work.

(Sara is particularly interested in buildings that were designed by
her
grandfather, a well-known architect of the early part of the last
century, who not only employed Yellin exclusively for ornamental
ironwork, Sara tells me, but gave Yellin a letter of introduction to
architects in Boston, only a year after Yellin opened his first shop.)

We will meet at 10 AM on Saturday, October 25 at the Rosenbach Museum
and Library (2010 Delancy Place, Philadelphia;
http://www.rosenbach.org/main.html; 215.732.1600), where there is an
exhibit of Yellin's "...fiendish and fanciful ironwork creatures
(monsters, gargoyles, and devils), along with technical drawings that
aided in their creation...." (I have not checked admission price.)

Since I don't know all of you, we will need some means of recognizing
each other. One means would be to wear something "blacksmithish" like
a
tee-shirt from an ABANA chapter. But I think it would be better if
we'd
come up with some other means of recognizing each other. Any good
ideas?

I intend to plan the route of the tour from Magaziner's book, "The
Golden Age of Ironwork," (http://www.bookmasters.com/skipjack/006.htm)
from which I expect to learn the locations of the less-known Yellin
works. We will not be venturing far from center city, so this tour
will
not include such locations as Valley Forge.

I can give no advice where to park in Philly. This area of town
likely
has some rather expensive parking garages, so carpooling into Philly
may
save you some considerable money. (If anyone can give better
suggestions, please do.)

I envision we will spend at least an hour at the Yellin exhibit there.

I don't yet have Magaziner's book, but I'm hopeful will be within
walking distance of some of them. With luck, we can leave our cars
parked and do the rest of the day on foot, stopping for lunch at some
local (possibly vegetarian) restaurant. If necessary, we would later
drive to another location for additional viewing.

At some point we'll break for dinner, and this will mark the end of
the
tour, proper. No later than 6:15 PM, my friend and I will leave
Philly
and head for Princeton, to get to Rum and Onions Halloween contra
dance
by 7:30 for the costume parade. So this won't be a particularly long
day.

(This contra dance is open to the public. Contra dancers among you
are
encouraged to attend, but I don't recommend this dance for beginners.
Halloween costume optional.

No formal RSVP is needed to attend this tour, but I'd like to get a
sense of who and how many are coming, so let me know. This strikes me
as a good outing to include spouce or significant other, but not kids.

(If your kid is REALLY interested in Yellin, bring him!)

Regards,

Bruce Freeman

P.S. This tour is not an official function of any group, including
NJBA and ABANA.
