Hello Larry,

I build a lot of fireplace door sets and your question depends on some givens
in your job. First is it a Rumford
fireplace? If so then the mason work, the fire box itself is designed
differently than a 'western fireplace'. A Rumford is
designed to throw the heat out the opening as opposed to a 'western' that
usually but not always has holes in the brick or
rock work above the cavity where heat radiates into the room. A Rumford
cannot be burned with the doors closed, be
sure your client knows this. In my area Rumfords are definitly the fireplace
of choice. I have built probably 30 firedoor
sets, I can only remember 2 that are not Rumfords. The doors can be shut on
a Rumford with a dying fire when the
home owners go to bed but not on a full blazing fire. Ceran glass or high
temp glass is definitly recommended on
Rumfords. In my area all glass companys charge between $40 & $50 a square
foot. This mounts up and the glass alone
can cost as much as $500 on an average size set.

Since the doors cannot be shut on a Rumford most of my clients choose solid
metal panels with a patina of their choice.
The doors are built so the panels can be slid out and screens set in and then
the Rumfords can be burned with the doors
closed. The other option is a metal drape mounted to the top horizontal of
the subframe, with this option the fire is
burned with the doors open.

My fire door sets range from around $2000 to $3200 depending upon the design.
I do enjoy building them as one can
bring a lot of forged work into something that is generally a fabrication
job. I do build everything from scratch, hinges,
latches, handles etc. well I guess not evewrything, I do buy the screen or
metal drape.
