Generally speaking you want to be at 80% argon, or better. There are a lot
of good articles out there on wire feed welding (aka GMAW) and
short-circuit vs spray-arc (sometimes known as "across the arc"). Just use
GOOGLE or other search engine and enter "GMAW spray arc" (without the
quotes) and you will find a lot of information. One good site is:
http://www.thefabricator.com/xp/Fabricator/Articles/Welding/Article254/Article254_p1.xml
and there are lots more.

But if you're not welding sheet metal (under 1/8"), then spray arc is the
way to go, although it's not the way to go for overhead welding and can be
tricky for vertical welding because it is hotter than short circuit welding
and the puddle is more liquid and drips if you're not careful.

All wire welders are not well suited for spray-arc, or so I understand. My
welder (POW-CON, now ARCON) has a position switch to select short circuit
vx spray arc.
