Hey Dave,
What you say is correct.
I'm pretty familiar with all the ins and outs of heat treating methods, and
the proper quench mediums for different applications, and I wouldn't use low
carbon to make an expensive cutting or striking tool.
But I think you are missing the point of Bruce's goal.
I believe that he is trying to make a down and dirty hammer that would be
easy to fabricate, with out special tools or exotic materials.
I think a bar of A-36 hardened in GSQ would adequately serve as a hammer
head in this application.
If it eventually does mushroom from use, it can easily be refaced with a
side grinder or replaced.
