I have seen a few use a Johnson furnace.
They used to be in every high school here in Minnesota, USA but now it
is hard to find a school with any type shop class.
They take a long time to heat up the mass of material they are made of
and have a tendency to scale the work a lot.
The last couple I bought for about $10 each but the source has dried up.
I still have one but it is so buried it will be sold at my estate
auction with the rest of the goodies

Of course, that anvil is in even sorry shape than mine!
But the design of that forge is interesting. Has anyone on the list
worked with one of those? How does it compare to furnace-type gas
forges? ...to coal forges?
