Larry, Steve and all:
It's my monday so I don't have time to do much more than scan the mail, I'll
repost a detailed description of what I came up with in a couple days. I
have it in a saved file somewhere amongst maybe 50-60 messages on the topic
so it'll take some time to dig out.
The short description goes like this: Force always takes the path of least
resistance and a fellow name of Massey came up with an elegantly simple
valving system in the late 20's.
Connect the compressor cylinder directly to the ram cylinder with airways,
top to top and bottom to bottom.
Then connect the compressor cylinder to itself, top to bottom with a bypass
airway.
Place a control valve in the bypass airway, a plumbing 1/4 turn ball valve
works just fine. (someone on the list has already tried this and it works)
With the compressor running and the bypass open the air takes the path of
least resistance; the bypass, and the ram just sits there. As you start to
close the control valve the path of least resistance becomes the airways and
ram and it begins to cycle with the compressor piston.
Place an integral check valve IN the control valve and depending on which
way the check valve allows the air to move in the bypass the ram will: Idle
in the up position, deliver a dead blow or clamp.
I'll post more details and the patent # in a few days.
