Hi Ralph:
It depends on how much extra heat you need to sustain the cut, which is 
to say, how thick the cast iron is. My recollection is using 1/2" scrap 
to fuel  a cut in 3/4" cast iron and it was a ragged cut. Could be it is 
more controllable with practice....Pete F
