My guess as to why cast iron cuts poorly:  any excess carbon in the=20
iron above eutectic point (2.1%) will be present as graphite, a very=20
refractory material (can withstand 3000F when used as a crucible,=20
'melts' around 5000K). I think the graphite screws up the cutting jet=20
of oxygen - deflects it from a nice straight line through the metal.=20
How does that sound?
