[TheForge] Post Vise Spring

Oh, c'mon! I'm just a hack blacksmith and I've got two or three leaf
springs sitting around the shop! Ya gotta scrounge when you get the
chance, not when you needed the stuff yesterday.

Besides which, leaf spring is only one of many possible materials you
could use. If you've got a power hammer, you could flatten an old
crowbar. You could normalize an old power-lawnmower blade and probably
get a workable spring, if the thing didn't have too many big holes in
it.

And even I could cut and forge a post vise spring (from flat stock) in
20 minutes. That, times shop rate, is probably the top price the thing
is worth.

But don't let me dissuade you. If you're making so much from hinges,
etc., be my guest and buy the thing. But then figure in the reforging
time when it doesn't fit quite right...

>Hmmmm, let's see, piece of leaf spring, 20 minutes of work, I think it

>would take you longer to order one than to make one.

Let's see... putting the tools in the car and driving to the
nearest junk yard, 30 minutes. Finding a good car and pulling the leaf

spring off, an hour. Driving back home, 30 minutes. Cutting and
forging
the leaf spring, 20 minutes. Finding the time away from hinges and
other
commission work, priceless....
