Since I learned back in the days when Donald Streeter's hammer technique
was popular, I have to keep thinking and retraining myself re how to
hold a hammer. (Donald Streeter's book, Professional Smithing, shows how
to vary the position of your thumb on the hammer handle in order to
maximize hammer control. Later it was discovered that this also
maximizes the potential for elbow problems.

good. I'd be interested in others' reactions to it too.
