I guess I should make clear that when I said "Absurd" I ment that a $100 or
$300 hammer may appear absurd in the context of a $15.00 store bought hammer
that, while it's not in the same class, will suffice, in skilled hands, to
turn out good work. THe same arguement can be leveled against a $700 hand
forged hunting knife when there is no question you can quarter a deer with a
$10 butcher knife and the meat will taste the same. I think everybody here
appreciates fine tools and understands the reason hand made tools cost what
they do, I was just trying to pass along my observation that farriers, in
particular, are prone to pay a lot for even factory made hammers, and
speculate on why.
I certainly would never suggest that any smith should make a hammer, by hand,
and sell it for one cent less than the traffic will bear. Frankly $100 seems
a like reasonable bargin to me - ever priced a japanese hand made chisel?
So I'm sorry if I didn't express myself clearly and I ment no offense, but
really, "ignorent" and "stupid" seems a little extreme and are trems,
frankly, I would almost take personally.
