For a given journal size, plain bearings are in principle
stronger than rollers, but suitability partly depends on the
bearing material and the precise nature of the ways in
which the bearing is loaded. For machinery such as a
hammer, I am greatly in favor of plain bearings. Simpler,
stronger, easier to maintain and their failure mode tends
to lean farther from the catastrophic. When rollers let
loose, you often wind up with neatly trashed equipment.
Plain bearings tend to fail far more gracefully.
