I missed the last part......

 I've had some trouble seeing some of my
layout marks when work was really hot.

 The layout I use is done cold and only with the same tools that will 
follow in the hot operations.  The tool cuts or dents (fullers)
should be well developed cold so that the tool will 'feel' the layout it 
made, when the stock is incandescently hot and bright.
The lights will overwhelm hot stock's glow but the layout really should 
be very pronounced and done with the tools which
will follow the layout once the stock is way hot.
