[TheForge] Power hammer questions

How about a self contained power hammer?
I've been making drawings and hashing through details with Steve Smith
recently and I haven't run into anything that'd be a deal breaker.
The big problem folk seem to be having is the control valving but there's a
very simple system to be found in the Massey pneumatic power hammer, patent
# 707,246.
I've been using http://ep.espacenet.com/ for patent searches though you'll
probably need to download the viewer.
If you look at the Massey drawings, don't let the seeming complexity fool
you, it's not as complicated as the drawings look he has several variations
of his valving schemes on one page.
In the simplest variation there's a single valve and it does all four
actions: Idle with the ram up, clamp, cycle and single blow at various
forces.
I've been giving a self contained hammer serious consideration for a number
of reasons:
Buying a power hammer would cost much less than getting it here unless I
want to part with $40k+ for a Kuhn and get free shipping. (Gee thanks!)
Another thing going for a self contained hammer over a Kinyon type hammer is
I can scrounge virtually everything I'll need to make it. I have a lathe
though so my options are a bit broader perhaps. I figure I can build a self
contained hammer for less than the price of an air compressor to run a 100
lb. Kinyon type, not counting high pressure a cylinder, valving, etc.
Something to think about.

If it ain't forged
it ain't real.
Wrought iron is.
