Those are screw presses.
Did you get the chance to watch him
demonstrate his wares at ABANA/
LaCrosse?
It his good for any number of things
that you might be tempted to do with a
treadle or power hammer as far as
marking chiseling bending go.
As with so many tools it is not a cure
all.
When I bought mine it was with simple
die forming of sheet metal in mind. I
found that a hand operated hydraulic
press was better suited. The screw press
is about to be moved from the sheet
metal shop into the smithy.
Mine is a 6B which is fairly large. I'll
post a picture for you if you would
like. It is much like John Newmans. I
believe that he already has a pic on the
photo site.
The Old World units seem well made.
There are used units out there.
My gut tells me that size does matter. I
do not think I would be as happy with a
smaller one.
