The piece (3/4" round) I had split horizontally in two separate places.
When I cut that section off and examined the remainder, I found two cracks or
hot shuts running vertically (i.e. along the length).
I've also had problems on some 1/4" stock which frayed at the end.
I always thought the problem was with me, despite all my efforts to ensure I
wasn't working it below a god forging temperature. It may still be me, but I'm
going to be paying much more attention to it from now on.
Besides, it gives me a good excuse to blame the problem on something other than
myself.

Just wandering what you guys are doing w/ the A36 thats giving trouble. In the
last ten years I've had half adozen holes I couldn't drill w/ anything but a
torch, but I've drilled a gazillion holes that were just fine. Last winter I
had a piece of 1/2" hot drawn square w/ a cold shut in the middle of it , I've
used thousands of them that had no defects. I've done everything imaginable w/
it hot and cold with no problem.
Having said all this I probably won't buy a decent piece of steel ever again.
