[TheForge] Power hammer injury

Thanks for the empathy...but...y'know. it was the knuckle of my left=20
index finger, that I've hit with one hammer or other 1000 times=20
before...and evidently about beaten the nerves into submission.. Now=20
that the cast is off and I'm , er, breaking my left hand in=20
again....gotta say, that it was the most comfortable broken bone I've=20
ever had.
Unfortunately, this isn't the first time with my left hand and the=20
treadle hammer...see
http://www.peterfels.com/bsab.htm
So I caught a lot of flack at the CBA conference for showing up winged.
That wasn't the only tooling that was adapted for one hand work during=20
that time. As usual, just when i get it all figured out and the=20
tooling worked up,,,,the job is over or the cast is removed. The nurse=20
was a little appauled at the condition of the cast which was held=20
together by then, with a fine hand( singular) forged steel clip.
Re a pic of the spring fuller holder...my digi camera is on the shelf=20
right behind Phlip's, I'm afraid.
But...i'll lay in 1000 words instead.
Took a hardy tang size piece of square tubing and welded it on=20
perpendicular,3" from the end of a scrap 4" X 10" X 1/2" plate...like a =

plate with a erection, sorta. Flipped the plate over and fitted the=20
tubing neatly into the hardy hole, hot. ( I have a matching hardy hole=20
on the anvil, treadle hammer , chisling table, and a conversion square=20
bush for the platen table. so this tool will fit in any of them). In=20
this case the plate now extended from the center to over the far side of =

the TH anvil ( spring loop is clear of the hammer)..
Next, modified the collection of spring fullers ( at least the ones=20
based on 1/2"round stock) by welding guide tabs ( appx 1/4" x 3/4" x 3" =

onto both sides of one leg of each spring tool, about 7" from the=20
working ends. The guide tabs lie on either side of the free side of the =

spring, keeping both sides in line with each other. Was going to use=20
just a "U" shaped piece of 1/4"X3/4" strap for this but had a clearance=20
problem specific to an application...would have been simpler.
Last, took 2, 2" pieces small channel and modified it to cradle the=20
1/4"x3/4' strap so the strap fit lengthwise in the channel .
The 2 pieces of channel were welded upright about one inch from far end=20
of the top of the plate where it hung out over the far side of the=20
treadle hammer anvil. Welded them face to face [ ] but separated by =

the width of the spring fuller guides and oriented flat sides parallel=20
to the length of the plate.
So, by dropping the guides of the spring fuller into the slot formed by=20
the channel sections, the working ( fuller) ends, end up being held=20
upright, in working position in the center of the anvil. By simply=20
lifting the spring fuller up, they come free so another spring tool can=20
be inserted in it's place.
OK, a pic would have been better...'s life.......Pete

Isn't it interesting how Americans are so adept at thinking through a pro=
blem and finding a workable solution? And not just a baling wire and tape=
solution, but am engineered solution. My hat goes off to you. Hope your =
finger heals straight and strong. The newer therapies include moving it a=
s soon as possible, do they have you in PT yet?
