Most pipes have some writing on them that could be a problem. Maybe it
can be sanded off? You might also want to apply some kind of patina to
make the pipe color more interesting.
For a clear finish, Deft lacquer (3 coats) is good on copper - either
brushed on or sprayed. It takes 3 coats to be really waterproof.
Deft is a solvent based lacquer so you'd need a respirator to work with
it inside (altho lots of people just use it anyway and breathe the
fumes.)
I'm assuming the part of the pipe you want to finish is indeed indoors?
Another option is a water-based varnish. Hood no longer makes their
metal finish, but I've found that General polyacrylic works well. It's
the easiest waterbased varnish to brush on, but can also be sprayed.
Again, you'd need three coats.
