Try and get the scouts involved as much as possible, rather than standing up
in front and talking/demonstrating all the time, get them to crank your blower,
maybe strike for you, after the first few minutes of talking you will see the
kids who are paying attention and will be good to help. Just having some of
them bend or twist something hot can impress them a lot. Mentioning that you a
couple or them can do this near the end of your demo can be a good carrot to
get them to pay attention.
I ran an event at a regional scout camp several years ago with Venturers
(scouts 14-17) where I had a patrol of 4-7 Venturers come by for about an
hour. I showed them how to make a tent peg them each of them made three
pegs. The stock we had was part of a coil of concrete nail stock donated by
one of the local steel mills so they had to straighten the rod then bend it on
a simple jig that required them to hammer it to give them a question mark shape
on the top. I ran about 120 kids through this event over the weekend, the
event was well received by both the kids and the leaders. If I ran it again I
think I would give them a different project perhaps a fire poker.
