I was just providing a little instruction to a fellow and his
11-year-old son (our newest NJBA members).  Among the things it occurred
to me to point out, just beyond the very basices,  were:
* When tapering iron to a point, put the point at the far edge of the
anvil, so you don't hit the anvil with the hammer.
* For best success making leaves, spoons, and many other forgings,
>isolate< the section you want to work on from the rest of the piece
(usually by fullering).

I can't recall to whom I owe those two bits of knowledge, but I find I
make use of them over and over...

Next month I'm doing a demo for one of the local scout troops. Ive got
2.5 to 3 hrs and

Materials: 5-7 min

      Iron
      Steel
      Alloys
      Carbon Content
      Hardening / Tempering
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Fracture examples of the above


Forging Operations 5-7 min

      Drawing out
      Upsetting
      cutting/punching
      bending/twisting
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; forge welding


Practical Examples 45 min to 1 hr.

      Leaf key ring
      back scratcher w/square knot handle
      bottle opener
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; small knife (if time permits)
