If I was driving from minnesota to vermont, I would first stop in at the
hossfeld factory in Winona Minnesota, then maybe stop in Chicago- right
along lakeshore drive, just at the south end of the gold coast, south of the
zoo, is a pair of Samuel Yellin gates, standing outside and proud. Lots of
great metalwork on old buildings in the loop in chicago as well.
You mentioned pittsburgh- The cathedral of learning has a huge amount of
Yellin ironwork, inside and out. That is in the Oakland neighborhood of
pittsburgh, a gothic skyscraper built in the 20's. Pittsburgh was a wealthy
town from its beginning, and boasts lots of amazing metalwork. I
particularly recommend the bridges- the smithfield bridge is an amazing
lenticular truss, and over on the alleghany there are a set of bridges
called the three sisters that are pretty great as well. In vermont, you
might be interested in the precision metalworking museum- its more machinist
than blacksmith, but industrial history of the best sort.
