That's a shame. I have been to one auction where this also happened.  I
don't know if a regular at the auctions gets to know the auctioneer and
makes the deal or they know the owner of the equipment and get to him.   I
have often wondered how that works if you contract for an auction does
everything listed have to be present and sold?  typically there is a
statement on the auction literature that the terms/conditions
deletions/additions announced at the auctions site on auction day usually
take precedence over the literature.

I am glad you at least managed to walk away with something.

The last time I was at a auction I was interested in a Ultrasonic Cleaner
and there was a large one at this auction but was #865 on the list and I
didn't have time to stay around.

Looks as though I lied about the Dixie auction in New Orleans.
There was an auction of newer machine tools conducted by a different auction
company conducted simultaneously in Gulf Port MS so only about 190 people
showed up at Dixie.
I and about 8 other Blacksmiths looked for the anvil you saw in the picture.
Finally saw Jim Stroynoff there, an he informed me that some body named Tom
made a deal before the well before the auction to purchase the anvil and
most everything else that was black smith related. So the stuff was hauled
off before the auction.
About 7 platens were still there. The only one in good shape went for $450.

I bought a few items: a milk box full of very exotic stick welding rods and
about 10 big rolls of 3/32" mig wire E-70, ss 308 and one partial roll of
monel. If any body can use that big size let me know, or the Gulf Coast boys
are going to be using it for bailing wire.
I also bought a rack of shop made platen dogs: because: they were listed as
a rack, were auctioned off before the platens, an just about no one knew
what they were.
A horizontal milling machine 20 ' high with an 8' table went for $2,800.
It's a really sad thing to see these old businesses close down.
Jim said that since it was located near the "D" Day Museum and the whole
area real Estate was going up scale, the property was worth much more than
the business.
