The anvil step can be used for upsetting - drive a bar into the step at
a 45 degree angle, rotate per blow
The anvil step can be used for offset bends
The anvil step can be used for the aforementioned 'dirty
swage'.........I use it to break strips of sheet when rolling tubes.
The anvil step can be used for backing up low angle work such as
undercutting
The anvil step cannot easily be dressed, so cut marks just pile up and
eventually the step area becomes a liability to clean work.

(now the pritchel hole may seem ready-made for use as a punching bolster
or a hold-down mount but my father-in-law has discovered its ancient and
intended use.......the bolt from his ground clamp-long gone-fits the
pritchel of his 'anvil'.....so the pritchel facilitates electric
welding....for one lost soul at least)
