Now I did not see all of this thread, but if this forge is the type that 
has a lever operated blower, then you will have some issues even with it 
lined. Instead of welding I would put several 'band-aides' on it. This is 
done by making several straps of flat stock, I used 2" X1/4" because I had 
it. Drill on ore two holes in each eand ( make strap long enough to cross 
over crack) also drill the pan, and tap the pan so that you can bolt the 
straps on the underside of pan. Grind the bolt tips flush with pan.
Worked well on my forge.
