        Bill, on simple curves, I just us a piece of 1/2" square to mimick
the top cap rail and go with that.
        With more complicated rails, I make a top rail pattern along with
dropping a plumb line at the knewl post of the stairs (or at the center of
the arcs) and measure my references from there to build a mock up of the
situation in the shop.
        When dealing with corners that are out of plumb and sweeping rails
that go around them, I often mock up with plywood patterns what the site has
for situations.......this is especially true if the rail is many states away
as has happened in the past.
