hello;

thank you dave. i have been searching with google all morning trying to
find a chart for mig tip actual internal diameter.

based on the chart dave uploaded.

mig tip tip i.d. (inches) drill size
0.023        0.031 +/- 0.002       68
0.035        0.041 +/- 0.002       59
0.040        0.046 +/- 0.002       56
0.045        0.051 +/- 0.002       55

that explains why the 0.035 mig tip and the 57 orifice are nearly equal.
that helps in understanding my subjective observations.

this brings us back to the original sidearm burner design by jerry
frost, rupert wenig, robert graumann, and others. instead of mig tips
they used an 1/8 brass pipe plug drilled with a #55 drill.
(please reference http://www.reil1.net/Sidearm.jpg)

with the availabilty of orifice plugs from jay hayes it may be wise to
modify the sidearm design to use these instead of the mig tips.

the mig tips are confusing since they are marked with the mig wire size
and not their true i.d. size. personally, i feel it far easier to equate
orifice sizes/ drill sizes than mig tip sizes. this also would do away
with the need for 1/8 schedule 80 red or yellow brass or black pipe
nipple. 1/8" schedule 40 would work just fine.

i am also starting to question the need for a truly asymmetric tee. a
3/4"x3/4"x1-1/4" tee would be easier to obtain.

poor ascii picture:

             <- 1-1/4" (really could be larger if that is what is
           |            available)
3/4" -> |--+--| <- 3/4"

i throw out to the group as a whole the suggestion that instead of the
modified sidearm burner with the tweco/tweeco mig tips we instead adopt
the original sidearm design by jerry frost and others with the possible
modification of using an asymmetric tee.

i will work on a design drawing later today and post it on my computer.
