I home schooled my daughter, and she never took an interest in
blacksmithing other than to ask me to make her things from time to time. 
My 14yo son is in private Christian school right now, (8th grade) but
will be home schooled for high school.  He loves the forge, and has been
striking and doing different repetitive operations for a few years now. 
He's better than I am at estimating how much stock is needed for
different projects, so I use the excuse that it's the apprentices job to
cut up the stock for the projects.  I have a lot less scrap left over
when I'm done now. : )
