Why taper?  Assuming it's going into wood and you're going to drill a
pilot hole, use an untapered twist.  Experiment until you know what
stock-size/pilot-drill/twist-pitch combo works well.  Use cold rolled
stock: comes with sharper corners that hot rolled.  Lube with parafin
wax or beeswax before screwing in.  Forging to diamond section or
fluting is a bonus for extra thread bite.
