To All,
I went digital two years ago. I just could not resist the temptation any
longer. I spent many years as a resolution and accutance freak with 35mm and
Nikon equipment. I just was not sure I could be happy with giving up both. I
also liked the idea of a full frame picture of a butterfly on a flower at 200
yards.
I began my search for a digital camera as most good engineers would by
looking for the biggest bang for the buck, i.e., maximizing my return on the
investment. I as first cut I wanted to cut through the hoopla and developed a
formula to see what the bang for the buck really was. The formula is the camera
price divided by the mega pixels times the optical zoom. Electronic zoom is a
joke so don't even consider it.
The Minolta Dimage5 (3.2 mp at 7x optical zoom for ~$525) was the best of the
bunch this time two years ago. I would have liked to spring for the Dimage7
but the extra $250 bucks for the 5 mp chip was just more than I wanted to
handle.
I shopped the NY discount houses, read their reviews which shortened the list
of potential sellers considerably, resisted the pressure sell on all kinds of
options and bought mine from Adorama.
The Dimage 5 did not get stellar reviews, it is a pig for power but it fit my
criteria and my less than delicate paws just fine. Even on a good printer
and paper, it is not PanX in Rodinal or Kodachrome/Kodacolor behind Nikkor
glass, but it works and I am generally satisfied. I have not explored the full
capabilities of the system but I have at least read the instruction manual.
