Nomex is not a good choice for contact with hot metal. It's designed for
flame resistance and WILL melt and deep fry you on contact with hot metal,
embers, etc.

Nomex is typically used as underwear with a hot contact material outerwear.
FD turnout gear is still heavy cotton canvas.

Kevlar is a much better choice for hot contact, lined leather is better.

I will try to find some Kevlar now<G>. Thanks.

My pleasure.

Having had hot burning synthetics on my skin I'd be remiss in not trying to
prevent the experience in others.

One of the mechanics at work accidently blew up a diesel fuel tank in the
heavy duty shop a number of years back. Burned the shop down and if there
hadn't been someone else on duty would've died in the fire. As it was the
synthetic coveralls he was wearing melted and left permanent scars on about
30% of his body. Skin grafts have removed the fabric pattern from his face
though the scars are still obvious.

He was welding up a crack in the tank and the coveralls were Nomex. They did
their job though had they been cotton or another synthetic he wouldn't have
survived the flames long enough for the other guy to drag him out. Nomex
coveralls were what keep the second guy alive long enough to get him out.

Nomex is marvelous stuff just not so good for touching red hot things with.

If it ain't forged
it ain't real.
Wrought iron is.
