Yes, and Yes. Ries.
That vise came out of that shop well AFTER the word was out about the shop
closing down. The thing with Seattle blacksmiths is: we all blew our wads in
the late 90's tooling up like crazy so nobody has any money left! You
should've seen the cone mandrel that they almost threw out; it had to have
been 5 feet tall and two feet wide at the base. I'm not sure who wound up
with it but is was amazing that the place wasn't picked over sooner. The
100lb little giant actually went for 500$ to a friend of a friend. I sure
didn't need it. You have to let the new guys in on the discoveries once in a
while, ya know? It gives them that giddy feeling when they think they have
the place all to themselves. heh..
Yeah, that's me on the hammer, too. Damn lighting makes my jowls look worse
than they really are.

steve-
did that vise come from Brekke Brothers?
It is really cool.
Us country mice got down there way too late, all those ballard
blacksmiths cleaned the place out by the time I got there. There was
only one platen table left, and it had been cut in half diagonally then
welded back together. Or maybe it was two diagonal half platen tables
made into one- I think that acorn might have used to made diagonal
halves, although I could be wrong. If I am going to drag home
something that heavy, I want it to be in one piece.

I was amazed at the high prices on most of the stuff they were selling-
Like 1500 for the hossfeld bender seemed pretty steep. It did have a
lot of tooling, but not much more than 1500 worth, plus a lot of it had
homemade additions welded on to it, which might have seemed like a good
idea at the time, but the whole beauty of a hossfeld is how flexible it
is, and if you start welding stops and things on the tooling, you
lessen that flexibility.

Evidently somebody named Larry got the little giant, which in and of
itself wasnt bad, although it needs a motor mounted on it as it was
line shaft driven, but he also got a ton or two of power hammer
tooling, and some of that was pretty nifty.

Also, is that picture entitled "forging" in the same photo folder you
at the newly rebuilt nazel?
