As I have experienced:
The purpose of flux is to coat the molten surfaces of the pieces you are
going to weld and keep air from forming any scale. There is no scale to
destroy once the fluxed surfaces are ready to weld, as long as all the
flux has not burned away, and you have a clean fire, and are not pumping
a lot of air into it.
With proper fire control, flux is not even necessary.
Weld simple shapes, and forge the welded areas into your 'odd' shapes.
