Never tried anhydrous but  I keep a jar of grocery bought borax on hand.
Before I use it I bake it in the oven on a cookie sheet.  It's starkly
different in use after drying in the oven.  It gets glassy like ez-weld.  It
keeps in the sealed peanut butter jar fine.

It's best to stir the borax while cooking to keep it from lumping.  (As the
water escapes the stuff gets gooey.)  When it not gooey it's done.  What's
left is dry powder, not like the sticky stuff straight out of the box.
