I don't know whether this will help, but Historic Allaire Village,
Monmouth Co., NJ, hails from that time period. The smithy there is
reconstructed, the original having fallen apart due to poor mortar.
It's a brick building with high roof (I suspect it was rebuilt higher
than the original), with four forges. This was an ironmaking village,
and the smiths produced hardware for products like stoves, in addition
to handling the usual repairs and demands for hardware. This is a big
shop, and probably atypical. Furthermore, I'm reasonably sure that the
forges were not reconstructed like the originals.

All that said, there may be a historian on staff who could help out. I
don't have a website or phone number, but they can be found if you look
for them.

One of the conservators of Ft. Mitchell, GA is looking at rebuilding
the
blacksmith shop for a living history museum, and is wanting to know the

size of the shop. I cant find anything on this particular Fort, but
one
would assume it was similar to other Forts of the era. Anyone have any

information as to the dimensions of a blacksmith shop of this time
frame.

thanks,

mike

Some people are like Slinkies...not really good for
anything, but you still can't help but smile when you
see one tumble down the stairs.
