Grant,

I was at a fellows shop that antiques muzzleloaders.  He said he boiled the
barrels in bleach, outdoors of course.  They had deep etches in them, not to
my liking, but then...

I've also been successful doing a faux rust finish for interior work.  Kevin

I make and rust over 1000 pieces of sculpture every year ranging from small
pieces to some 15 feet tall. I remove the mill scale either with
sandblasting or a dilute solution of muriatic acid. Then a mixture of 1 pint
hydrogen peroxide, 1/cup vinegar, and 13 cup of salt is sprayed on. The rust
starts to form immediately and within an hour or less the piece looks
rusted. I rinse it after any aware from an hour to 12 hrs. It continues to
rust quite fast.

For some folks tell them to come back in an hour and I will have a piece
rusted for them. They are very happy to come back an hour or two later and
see what was a black mill scaled piece now all rust. Of course it is not a
very deep rust, but it looks good and will continue to deepen, especially in
rainy or high humidity weather.

If you don't rinse it, it will turn what I consider a very ugly blackish
rust.
