[TheForge] Stick welding question

Bill, 99% of my welding is done with wire and by TIG
nowadays..........when I do stick weld it's due to wind conditions or
needing the depth of an electrode to reach something.
When I so stick weld(on rare occasion) I almost always use 7018 or
10018 for what I do. On the occassion that I should need 7014 or 6013 as
I've stored these for years and don't need them much..........I'm curious as
to why it ruins the rod with mild steel electrodes? I've never heard this
and would like to know.
My approach has always been to keep the rod in the air tight 10 lb
canister tubes and I keep all my rods and wire in two lockers with a light
bulb to keep them dry, so I've never had a problem, but would like to know a
good reason to ditch soggy rod when need be instead of screwing around
trying to dry it.
I also have two rod ovens that I use mostly when folks on a job
specify that they be used, but most of my welding is not that critical to
specification - and I've always been asked to keep the 7018 rod in ovens for
those particular jobs.
Thanks,
Ralph
