[TheForge] finish for cooking forks

The polymerized olive oil treatment sounds good to me. I used to make
cooking forks to go in wooden handles that a friend turned. After all
the forging and draw filing was done, I'd heat them dull red and toss
them quickly into a pan of mineral oil (right from the drugstore -
foodgrade.) They'd cool in the oil, turning a nice somewhat dark gray.
Like the olive oil finish, it would have to be kept up with hand
washing, drying, and reoiling with just about any kind of oil.

I used to use a similar finish on leaf keyrings that Bob Bergman taught
me how to make. For those, I'd often wire brush them a bit while still
warm, dull red or so, with a 4" Makita plugged in near the anvil, then
plunge them into the mineral oil. This gave them a blued look. That
finish has lasted quite well.
